Job Summary:

As a senior mechanical engineer at Virtual Incision, you will design, prototype, test, and produce cutting-edge miniature robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) platforms that advance the field of surgery. You will own projects from conception to manufacturing, through collaboration with electrical engineers, software engineers, scientists, surgeons, vendors, and other subject-matter experts to ensure our work continues to enhance patient outcomes while providing excellent value for our customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop hardware for all system components for the Virtual Incision robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) device.
  • Assist in the definition, creation, analysis, and allocation of system hardware requirements.
  • Design and develop instruments (e.g., scissors and graspers) and specialty tools (e.g., vessel sealers).
  • Analyze, review, and evaluate design alternatives and failure modes.
  • Strong at executing and delivering on quality products.
  • Design and write verification protocols for created designs.
  • Conduct integration and verification test activities.
  • Conduct clinical and benchtop testing activities.
  • Develop Design History File (DHF) deliverables.
  • Participate in Risk Analysis activities.
  • Support process and design improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in technical reviews.

The ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Adapt to situations that require exploring wide-open idea spaces as well as those that require finding creative solutions to highly-constrained design problems.
  • Understand the value of building prototypes to answer questions but will not be afraid of working through problems on a whiteboard either.
  • Work cross-functionally and learn from software, mechanical, and electrical engineers.
  • Communicate with subject-matter experts outside of the engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrate strong execution skills. 
  • Take ownership and drive assigned projects to achieve milestones.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline required.
  • 5–10+ years of experience in product design (owning products from concept to production) required.
  • Mechanical design and CAD software experience required – Solidworks experience preferred.
  • Problem-solving and design experience required.
  • Previous medical device or other regulated industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of FDA Quality System and Design processes preferred.
  • Experience in robotics engineering is preferred.
  • Programming experience in MATLAB, scripting languages, or other programming techniques is preferred.
  • Experience in plastic molding design preferred.

Device usage in all surgical procedures should be guided by the clinical judgment of an adequately trained surgeon.
