Virtual Incision

is on a mission to simplify robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), so more patients and their surgeons can access its benefits every day.

Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, and holding over 200 patents and patent applications, the company is developing MIRA, the first-of-its-kind miniature, and highly accessible RAS platform. With MIRA, our goal is to make every operating room RAS-ready.

MIRA is currently in FDA clinical trials under an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) and is being studied first for bowel resection, with additional potential applications to follow.

Virtual Incision was founded by Shane Farritor, PhD, MS, and Dmitry Oleynikov, MD, FACS, who combined their NASA engineering and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) experience to create MIRA, a small, sleek RAS platform that brings a whole lot to the table.

Chief Executive Officer

John Murphy, M.B.A., M.S., is a global medical technology and health sciences executive who has held leadership roles in large public companies, middle-market private equity businesses, and venture capital environments over the past 30 years. Given his former industry roles as CEO, COO, Director, and Investor, he has extensive experience in technology development for robotic and minimally invasive surgery. He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in computer science and an MBA in international finance

Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Shane Farritor, Ph.D., M.S., holds a doctorate and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and is currently a faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Prior to his work at the university, Shane studied at the Kennedy Space Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  Shane holds over 170 patents and has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles in the field of robotics.

Dmitry Oleynikov MD, FACS

Co-Founder & Chief Medical Officer

Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., F.A.C.S., is an active general, esophageal, and minimally invasive surgeon. As a Clinical Professor of Surgery, he has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, and he holds over 25 patents in the area of surgical robotics. The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons has recognized him for his achievements with an award in Excellence in Leadership.  He currently serves as Chair of Surgery at RWJ Monmouth Medical Center and Professor of Surgery at RWJ Rutgers University Medical School.

Mukund Srinivasan PhD, MBA

Chief Financial Officer

Mukund Srinivasan, Ph.D., M.B.A, is a seasoned Finance Executive and Board Advisor in varied industries such as semiconductors, services, and med-tech.  He received a Ph.D. in Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Princeton University.  He has held leadership roles in both public and private companies as the VP of Finance, VP of FP&A, and Corporate Controller / Principal Accounting Officer.  Mukund has presided over significant fund raising as well as mergers and divestitures.

Florence Beck MS

VP Clinical & Regulatory Affairs

Florence Beck, M.S., has almost 20 years of experience generating evidence to support national and international regulatory submissions, health economics initiatives, and market adoption strategies. She has built and managed a wide range of research projects including investigator-initiated studies, large post-market registries, and randomized controlled multicenter trials. Florence holds an undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in Regulatory Affairs from Northeastern University.

VP Operations

Eric Clyse is a proven operations and sourcing executive with over 25 years in the medical device industry. He has delivered success at both multinational businesses as well as ground floor start-ups by establishing world class supply chains and focusing on building high performing teams. Eric’s expertise in launch readiness, quality, and cost reduction has led to many successful product launches, M&A activities, and the integration of acquired companies primarily in the robotic-assisted surgery and ultrasound space. He received his degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a Six Sigma Blackbelt.

VP Sales

Chris O’Hara is an award-winning sales leader with over 20 years of experience building commercial teams and driving results at innovative medical device companies. He has partnered with major institutions across the country to bring robotic-assisted surgery to general and colorectal surgeons, gynecologists, and spine surgeons. Chris has led sales training departments and launched several products throughout his career. His passion is recruiting, coaching, and developing the next generation of sales leaders in the industry. Chris received his degree in Business and History from Loyola University Maryland.

VP Engineering

Rick Schefelker is a proven R&D executive with 30 years of medical device experience in product development, creation of R&D teams, and leading multi-disciplinary cross-functional projects. He has proven results delivering high quality medical device products across a wide range of specialties, within both large companies and startups. Rick was intricately involved in the M&A of his previous startup. He received his degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and holds numerous patents in the fields of cardiology and tumor ablation.

VP Marketing

Crystal Simon, Ph.D., brings 15 years of expertise in market development, upstream marketing, and surgeon education, with a strong background in robotic-assisted colorectal and gynecologic surgery. She has played an instrumental role in product launches and commercialization in the context of both small and large organizations. Crystal received her doctorate in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, and she holds 6 United States patents including inventions for instruments used in minimally invasive abdominal surgery.
